Vegetation - Flora
In
Poros,
just
like
on the other islands of the Saronic, the condition
is obviously better, as far as the natural environment
is concerned, comparative to Attica.
Almost
the entire surface of the island, except the
sections of the North- North-east side of it,
is covered by pine trees.
On the north- north-east
side
of the island, there are olive groves and some
farms with lemon trees and orange trees. In
the area of Fousa, are still cultivated some
vineyards,
by which the great Fousaetian wine is produced.
On the north of Fousa, on the mountains, bushes
and brushwood are found, with the most dominant,
the oak trees, the lentisks, the bretia and
the bearberries, while in the peninsula of Bisti,
the venies dominate.
Sfairia is triangular
stone
palisade
that has three sides. The beds of stone are
of trachyte and the vegetation is almost non-existing.
Nowadays, it has no natural source of water.
Its coasts have totally 3.650
m. length
and are extended towards three directions. It
is volcanic and came from an explosion of the
volcano, from which Methana also came, during
the pre-historic years.
Fauna
The
geologic bedrock (limestone), the physiognomy
of the flora and the climatic conditions do
not allow the existence at the area o f a big
variety of species of land fauna and bird-fauna.
The species that are noticed are rabbits, wild
bunnies, badgers, mice, hedgehogs, turtles and
ferrets. On the opposite Troizinia, there are
also wolves, coyotes and foxes.
In
the whole Troizinia, from the side of lizards,
the tree snake (dragkolia), the asp, the arrow
snake, and rarely the viper live there.
From
the side
of birds, there are many in the area, like the
crow, the swallow, the swift, the sparrow, the
owl, the gkionis, the gowk, the sea bird, the
wild dove, the wagtail, the butcher bird, the
kotsifi, the redneck, the karakaxa and various
other
singing birds, like the chaffinch, the goldfinch,
the greenfinch.
Also,
the emigrating birds that visit the island are
the trugoni, the quail, the babbler, the woodcock,
the apiarist bird and the fig eater.
The
marine ecosystem of the era is healthier than
the one of the North side of the Saronic and
presents a pretty big variety of population
and species.
Among these, the main species
that have been found are: the alevin, the sardine,
the atherine,
the gauros, the butt fish, the boneto, the red
mullet, the koutsomoura, the codfish, the mullet,
the goby, the mackerel, the safridi, the kolios,
the sparos, the brassie, the bass, the khan,
the sargos, the scorpio fish, the lithrini,
the barren fish, the rofos, the sfyrida, the
synagrida, the lauraki, the tsipoura, the octopus,
the cuttle-fish, the devil fish, the moray eel,
the mougri, the garfish and many other different
species of sea kinds.
Lately,
it has also been developed in the area an organized
fish-culture and nowadays, five units function
already that breed the lauraki and the tsipoura
with satisfactory odds.
